Design Concept

DU PAIN — Reframing the Granary

Beginning with the granary — and with grain, the elemental origin of bread — the design reconsiders the relationship between brand, material, and space.

A granary is architecture born from the simple act of storing grain. Its straightforward structure, honest materials, and textures shaped by time form its most elemental architectural language. Rather than reproducing its form, we draw from its inherent simplicity, deconstructing the granary into structure, texture, and light, then reassembling these elements through a contemporary language for DU PAIN.

Across the façade, layers of hand-applied plaster create subtle tonal variations reminiscent of the color and crust gradually formed as sourdough bread bakes. Inside, dark ironwood rises from the vertical surfaces and extends overhead, intersecting as a series of timber beams that reinterpret the exposed framework of a traditional granary. Their rhythm gives depth and direction to the space, naturally guiding the eye toward the bread displays. Structure is no longer something to be concealed, but becomes part of the spatial order itself.

Dark ironwood is layered with reclaimed timber bearing the traces of time, alongside raw hand-applied finishes and refined displays. Together, these materials establish a balance between old and new, roughness and precision.

Brand identity is deliberately restrained. Rather than relying on prominent signage, the logo is integrated into the sculpted cylindrical column and across all four faces of the cubic volume beneath the arcade. The brand is not revealed from a single viewpoint, but gradually perceived through movement and shifting perspectives.

DU PAIN’s signature blue appears sparingly across shelving and selected details, introducing a restrained yet distinct accent against the dark ironwood and earthy material palette. As symbols recede, identity no longer depends on scale; instead, it is embedded within material, color, and the act of seeing.

Light becomes the final material.

By day, it reveals the natural tones and textures of ironwood, hand-applied plaster, and aged timber. As evening falls, warm light slowly traces the wooden framework, beams, and textured walls, bringing another layer of warmth to the otherwise modest structure.

From a grain, to a loaf of sourdough, and back to the granary.

Rather than recreating the granary,
we reconsider its essence —
reframing it as an everyday landscape for DU PAIN.
